Hackney House is a thoughtfully completed loft extension with a proposed rear addition to a Victorian family home in East London. Designed to meet the needs of a growing young family, the project adds essential living space while preserving the charm of the original structure.
At roof level, a new floor introduces a spacious bedroom and ensuite, offering sweeping panoramic views. A bespoke steel and oak staircase—flooded with natural light from a rooflight above—creates a striking vertical connection through the home.
On the ground floor, a reimagined kitchen extension transforms a once-narrow space into a generous, light-filled hub for family life and entertaining. A dramatic double-height side return infill links seamlessly to the existing living area, while newly formed openings lead out to a re-landscaped garden—blurring the boundary between interior and exterior.
Natural timber is used throughout, with exposed structural elements and crafted joinery adding warmth, grain, and texture. Carefully positioned glazing maximises daylight and frames views to the lush new planting, creating a calm, nature-connected retreat in the heart of the city.
