Sustainable Workspaces
Renold Building, Manchester
Following the success of the Sustainable Workspaces project at County Hall, the client has been looking at establishing a Northern base in the city of Manchester. The city has a wide variety of material and climate tech innovators who are championing new methods of construction and environmentally friendly technologies.
The project involves the meanwhile use of an old university building whilst a wider development of the area is under way. The plans involve the addition of open workspace, meeting rooms, kitchen/teapoint areas and event spaces which will compliment the lower floors which will host a cafe/bar, exhibition space and learning centre.
Building on the knowledge developed from the County Hall project, the designs focus on entirely demountable interventions and materials made from waste. Waste generated from on site demolition from previous works is to be utilised in making new materials and suppliers such as Deakin Bio are providing no-fired tiles made entirely from waste from the ceramics industry.
Focus is also applied to sourcing materials locally such as fabric for upholstery which will be sourced from a second hand fabric supplier in Chorlton, whilst all timber and plywood is to be reclaimed from a local timber reclamation yard in Manchester called Touch Wood.
